- In January 1950, Commonwealth countries met in Colombo, Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) with the objective of formulating a strategy for stemming poverty in postcolonial Asia.1 Central to the resulting Plan was the Technical Cooperation Scheme, designed to provide equipment, expertise, and the training of students in sponsor countries. In 1951, these so-called Colombo Plan students began arriving in Australia as one of the first groups of non-European entrants since the inception of the White Australia Policy in 1901.2 Here I identify the important role ascribed to these students within the Australian print media, with particular focus on their contribution to Australian knowledge of Asian cultures and languages and the broader task of establishing stronger Australia/Asia ties. I suggest that within the discursive practices of print media coverage, the reader may glimpse a paradigm shift in the understanding of Australia’s place in the international geopolitical order and a growing acknowledgement of the desirability of engaging with the nations of Asia as partners and equals in a mutually beneficial association.
